As the autumn season sets in, Vata dosha naturally increases, leading to dryness, coldness, and a sense of imbalance in the body and mind. To counteract this, Ayurveda recommends warming, nourishing foods that ground and stabilize Vata. Our diets should become warm, building and nourishing as the weather begins to cool.
Here’s a very simple and soothing recipe to keep your Vata balanced this fall season:
Warming Spiced Sweet Potato Soup
Ingredients:
2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
1 tablespoon ghee or coconut oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon ginger, grated
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups vegetable broth
Salt to taste
Instructions:
Heat ghee or coconut oil in a pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
Stir in grated ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon, sautéing for a minute.
Add the sweet potatoes and broth, and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until the sweet potatoes are soft.
Blend the soup to a creamy consistency and season with salt.
