Grounding Kitchari for Balance and Clarity

This Full Moon in Virgo, nourish your body and mind with a comforting bowl of Kitchari, a classic Ayurvedic dish known for its balancing and cleansing properties. Virgo’s earthy energy encourages grounding and intentional living, making Kitchari a perfect meal to align with these themes. Packed with easily digestible ingredients, this recipe supports detoxification and fosters clarity, allowing you to feel centered and rejuvenated.


Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup split yellow mung dal (rinsed well)

  • 1/2 cup basmati rice (rinsed well)

  • 6 cups water

  • 1 tbsp ghee (or coconut oil for a vegan option)

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds

  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing) (optional, for digestion)

  • 2 cups chopped seasonal vegetables (like carrots, zucchini, spinach, or sweet potato)

  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)

  • Fresh cilantro (for garnish)


Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base:Heat the ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin and mustard seeds, letting them sizzle for a few seconds. Stir in ginger, turmeric, coriander, fennel seeds, and asafoetida. Sauté until aromatic.

  2. Combine Lentils and Rice:Add the rinsed mung dal and basmati rice to the pot, stirring to coat them with the spices.

  3. Simmer:Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes.

  4. Add Vegetables:Stir in your choice of chopped vegetables and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes, or until the lentils, rice, and vegetables are soft.

  5. Season and Serve:Add salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve warm in a bowl for a grounding, nourishing meal.
